A few days after Rusty showed up at our door, the neighbor who found them texted that she had seen another kitten at an address close to where she found Rusty. We headed right out and found… nothing. But looking at the satellite photo, it was clear that the house backed up to the park so we decided to go check out the park. As we walked up the back of the house, there they were, three more kittens hanging out on top of a fence of someone’s back yard.
This was clearly the rest of Rusty’s litter and certainly not anyone’s pets (we asked the homeowner and he just said that he’d seen them around and clearly didn’t want anything to do with them). So, we set a trap on the top of the fence and within minutes we had two kittens! Alas, when the door to the trap closed, it bumped into one of them and so it didn’t latch and one of them was able to push their way out before we could secure the trap.
Relieved to have caught another, but saddened that one escaped, we took Millie home and gave them a bath and some food. Over the next two days we went back at the same time of day and were able to catch first Smudge and then Finn. We saw adult cats around but no more kittens and the adults seemed very wary of the trap so we’re not sure how we’ll be able to get them neutered. For now, we’re focused on the kittens.
With the whole litter safe at home, we’ve been working hard to socialize these kittens. They’re all very sweet and will settle down purring on your lap after a few minutes, but they still spook easily and are wary of the dogs. A bit more time in our house should get them all ready for forever homes.
